Five Mile Lake

Five Mile Lake by Rachel Bonds

Directed by Emily Mann at the McCarter Theatre Center

Original Music & Sound Design: Daniel Perelstein Jaquette

Set Design: Edward Pierce

Costume Design: Jennifer von Mayrhauser

Lighting Design: Jeff Croiter

For Five Mile Lake, I composed delicate transition music to help set the tone of the play, taking us back and forth between the interior of a bakery and an exterior scene by the side of a frozen lake in the winter. These sets were staged on a revolve, which provided musical inspiration based on the image of a music box and its associated emotions.

For this score, I wrote music for piano (using extended techniques, such as plucked strings and harmonics), clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, two violins, and a viola. I rehearsed this instrumental ensemble, and took them into the studio to record them. All of the music was performed by the musicians (i.e. none of it was created by a computer or virtual instruments).

Enjoy listening to excerpts from the score of Five Mile Lake!
