“Anthropocene, a high-impact original devised physical theatre performance that examines our current geological epoch—an age in which human activity has significantly impacted our climate and environment. The convergence of the global syndemic—the Covid-19 pandemic, the climate crisis, social justice unrest, and social systems pushed to their breaking point—indicates an imperative for real change. Because scientific data can be opaque and difficult to decipher, climate scientists face challenges in prompting the general public to act. This is where performance comes in. Anthropocene is an evocative piece of physical theatre that crafts layered visual storytelling into a non-linear mosaic of moments, with text sparsely incorporated through projections and recordings.”

This was a highly conceptual and design-forward world premiere production. Sound and music needed to rise to the level of the drama of the visual designs, and I selected 80 minutes of music to underscore the entire experience. My responsibilities in this production included sound system design, collaboration with director (ASU Theatre Professor) Rachel Bowditch to select music, editing and intentionally glitching the music, the creation of sound effects, recording and editing of voiceover, and overseeing the mix of amplified voices and pre-recorded sound and music in performance.
